Some of us just have the spirit of an entrepreneur running through our veins. We have big ideas and love the hustle to build a business! But time and time again I see small business owners, whether they are just starting out or have been around for a while, lose their drive because of the comparison they have on themselves and their businesses. This comparison always leads to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome and comparison are the biggest ways to kill an entrepreneurial heart. Don’t lose sight of your dreams, here are a few pieces of advice to help you to stop comparing yourself and your business.
The number one complaint I receive from photographers is that their area is saturated with other photographers that already have a huge client base. This is probably true! But the thing with photography is that you can easy make room for yourself by making a name for yourself. There is enough opportunity to go around, photography may be a hugely saturated market, but there is totally enough of the pie for everyone to have a slice and be wildly successful! The key is learning how to perfect your talent, while relying on others to help in areas that you may not be as well versed in.
People are going to love you for YOU! Your personality and the way you treat your clients will speak volumes and make lifetime connections. It’s boring to be the same as everyone else. If we were all the same, then we wouldn’t need friends. Right? Think about it, why do we have friends? Because they make us laugh and are unique personalities. If we were all the same, what fun would that be? So what your Instagram isn’t as ‘aestically pleasing’ as Susie’s down the road. Are you booking clients? Are your clients happy? Are YOU happy? Then move on, be different, and be you.
You’re talented too. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably doubted whether or not your ability to even take pretty pictures. Why would someone choose you to take their pictures? There is something about your pictures that stood out to them, something about your personality or brand that they fell in love with. Trust your clients and trust that they chose you for a reason. Not only do they trust you, but they believe in your talent and ability to capture their memories for them. Don’t get caught up in self doubt! You are in this industry for a reason!
Imposter syndrome sucks. But you don’t have to deal with it! Next time you catch yourself comparing yourself or your business, stop and remind yourself this. You are talented and your unique talent will bring clients to you! If you need a little help getting over those humps and getting help with the areas of marketing that you are not as well versed in, let’s chat and strategize!
